Quartz glass is an acidic material that is inert to any acid except hydrofluoric acid and hot phosphoric acid. It serves as an excellent acid-resistant material with better chemical stability than opaque quartz glass, and is non-hygroscopic and non-weathering.
Quartz glass exhibits high dielectric strength and low conductivity. Even at high temperature, high pressure, and high frequency conditions, it maintains high dielectric strength and resistance with almost no dielectric loss in the applied frequency band, making it an excellent high-temperature dielectric insulation material.
Quartz glass has unique optical properties, transmitting both far-ultraviolet spectrum (making it ideal for UV-transmitting applications) and visible light with near-infrared spectrum. It features high temperature resistance, small thermal expansion coefficient, excellent chemical thermal stability, and minimal bubbles, streaks, uniformity issues, and birefringence comparable to general optical glass.
The coefficient of thermal expansion of quartz glass is small—only one-twelfth to one-twentieth that of ordinary glass. Standard testing involves heating specimens to 1200°C and then rapidly quenching in cold water; the material withstands this process more than three times without cracking.
Quartz glass mechanical properties are superior to conventional glass and ceramics, though it exhibits some brittleness. While theoretical calculated strength reaches approximately 24×1.3 MPa, actual measured strength is typically tens of times lower than this value.
The quartz structure remains relatively open, allowing certain gas ions to diffuse through the network even at high temperatures, with sodium ion diffusion occurring particularly rapidly. This property is especially important for specific user applications.
